Professional Fun at Lake Austin
If you’re a business meeting professional looking to organize a corporate event but would like an alternative to the capital’s trendy urban environment, consider taking a look at the scenic retreat of Lake Austin. This body of water is actually a reservoir built in 1939 and is now one of six manmade lakes formed from the Colorado River in Central Texas. The surrounding area has become a favorite place among tourists and is becoming increasingly popular with meeting planners who are learning to take advantage of the many opportunities for group activities.

Resorts and Meeting Space

Lake Austin boasts an impressive array of resorts for the perfect corporate retreat. The Lake Austin Spa Resort is a nationally recognized facility that offers meeting planners the opportunity to create customized group packages to fit the unique requirements for each corporate event. Possibilities include meals in the resort’s exclusive dinning quarters, luxurious spa treatments, private group activities including yoga, boat cruises, and teambuilding workshops, and access to conference rooms and meeting facilities. Meeting planners will also want to ask about available employee appreciation to give the event a more personal touch.

Activities on the Water

Exploring the lake by boat should be a top priority on any Lake Austin itinerary and meeting planners will find this an easy excursion to execute given the number of options available. Sunshine Machine Boat Tours and Austin Party Cruises both offer multi-layer crafts with a maximum capacity of 75 people. With audio and visual equipment available upon request and open opportunities for off-site catering, party boats are an untapped resource for hosting interesting meetings and teambuilding gatherings.

Local authorities have made the reservoir an ideal location for recreational fishing by filling the waters with heavy amounts of largemouth bass, catfish, and sunfish. Fishing is largely unrestricted in most parts of the lake, making for an easily accessible group outing. However, grass carp are currently under protection, so if one is caught, it should be handled with care and set back loose into the water.

Outdoor Fun

Lake Austin also gives visitors an opportunity for a rewarding day of outdoors activities.
Emma Long Metropolitan Park is the lake’s only camping area and can be utilized to provide a day’s worth of athletic activities. The park contains an archery range, motorcycle and mountain bike paths, a nature trail for hiking, a specially designated segment of the lake for swimming, and picnic areas that are available for recreation.

Hiring a charter bus for a day of sightseeing is also a great way for groups to experience the location. A drive up Mount Bonnell has become a popular tourist activity because of the local folklore surrounding the area. The peak of Mount Bonnell offers beautiful panoramic views of Lake Austin, the city of Austin, and the surrounding hill country. The ascent if filled with picnic areas and rest shelters, creating the possibility for a relaxing meal outdoors.
